Personality: In looking at Elena's personality, it's important to note several key events that have defined her. First and foremost, there was the time both before and after the death of her parents - a significant event that changed her in more ways than just the initial grieving. Before her parents died, Elena was indistinguishable from any other high school girl - bright, popular, Miss Mystic Falls and a cheerleader among many other things - and her problems were equally normal. The car crash on the Wickery Bridge set a series of events in motion, of course, but it also affected Elena very negatively for a long time afterward. She became withdrawn and depressed, reaching out to no one save for writing in the journal her mother had always encouraged her to use. She struggled to be a support system for her younger brother Jeremy, who continued to act out and rebel as a means of dealing with his own grief. When she met Stefan, she started to slowly re-discover traces of the girl she had once been while still maintaining the emotional strength and maturity left behind after the loss of her mother and father.
As a human, Elena was selfless. She was known among her friends as compassionate and caring, but often to a fault - she would rather risk her own safety than put the lives of those she loves in danger. This was often be a source of frustration for many of her friends, who considered her safety to be the most important thing above all else, and not just because she was the living human fulfillment of an ancient prophecy. But Elena's compassion was what extended the furthest even in the wake of difficult decisions - she was able to eventually forgive Stefan for his dishonesty about Katherine, and she continually allowed Damon to get away with despicable behavior and comments mostly because she knew it was usually meant in jest. (Usually.) Her friends and family were the most important things in her life, and her love for them went hand-in-hand with her drive to fight for them, to protect them and to be honest with them - even if the truth sometimes hurt.
In the end, though, Elena was only human - and these human characteristics were what gave her emotional power during her transition into a vampire. As a vampire, however, her emotions were also considered her weakness. While vampires have the ability to elect to turn their emotions off if they so choose, Elena originally embraced hers, recognizing that they were more of an asset and wanting to avoid the shift to inhumanity at all costs. That all changed, however, with the death of Jeremy. Rather than experience the shattering grief of losing her brother, she made the decision to turn off her emotions, and became a manipulative, blood-thirsty vampire, not caring about who she hurt in the process. When she finally turned her humanity back on, she was filled with remorse, guilt over all the innocent people she'd hurt or killed, and it's something that stays with her every day. It defines all of her decisions moving forward.
Ultimately, Elena knows the risks she must take on a daily basis - and the more she learns, the more she realizes that the danger is never truly going to go away. But she also knows that if she doesn't stand up and do what she needs to do, her safety and the safety of everyone involved with her is at risk. She's scared of losing the people she cares about, and she'll stop at nothing in order to make sure that it never happens. Somewhere along the way, she managed to stop being normal, but she has no desire to go back to the way things were before.
Powers/Abilities: Elena possesses the strengths of any vampire from her world: super strength and speed, as well as agility - although she does have some an advantage in the agility department due to pursuing gymnastics and cheerleading when she was still a human. Her senses are heightened, especially her hearing. She can compel people - by making eye contact, she can make them do her will, alter their memories or erase certain events from their mind. She can also heal at an accelerated rate and is relatively immortal - she will forever look like a teenager, even while she ages as a vampire.
However, she does have some weaknesses - a werewolf bite is fatal to her, she can be poisoned by vervain, and she can't walk in the sunlight without a special ring enchanted by a witch (namely, her friend Bonnie). She can also die via a stake to the heart. She is a relatively new vampire, and against an older vampire she is forced to resort to cunning and smarts in order to best them or at least hold them off long enough to run and regroup.

[ When the device clicks on, it's only Elena's voice, soft and reflective. She knows she doesn't have much of a platform here, but she's really just trying to reach her friends - if they're around.
She'd sought out their names in her mind, listing each one - Bonnie, Caroline, Matt, Stefan, Damon - and whether it goes through or not, she isn't sure. ]
I don't know if any of you can hear me, or if any of you are even here. A lot has happened. People got hurt, and a large part of it was because of me. The things I said - the things I did - I'm going to have to live with them. I know that now. It doesn't - it won't - change how sorry I am. I need you all to know how important you are. How much you mean to me. How much I lo - how much I care about each and every one of you.
I just hope I get the chance to tell each of you in person.
[ There's the sound of a small sigh, and then the 'call' disconnects. ]
